Underfloor heating does just that. Because it’s not trying (and failing) to heat the entire airspace of a room like a conventional heating system, cycling through a hot-air/no-air/hot-air cycle to maintain a tiny temperature range, underfloor heating is a much more efficient way to heat the house…and a great way to decrease energy bills.

In a modern radiant heating system, heat is supplied by electric wires or hot water tubes that are buried under the floor. As the thermal radiation rises up and out of the floor, they warm up everything they touch, which items then radiate heat as well. While the air temperature in an underfloor heating system tends to remain pretty constant, you will feel and stay comfortably warm because the surfaces you touch are warm, which means they won’t steal warmth from you.

With all that they have going for them, it might be hard to understand what, exactly, could be a disadvantage of having an open floor plan and opting for a closed floor plan instead. Well, there are a few cons to the open floor plan, depending on your point of view.

One way to achieve an opened up look in any room in the house (even the kitchen!) is to make larger pieces of furniture or even the architecture itself incorporate legginess. This allows our eyes to travel above, around, and under even the largest of elements, thus maximizing the sense of openness.

However, you should know this is not exactly a practical idea since marble gets stained easily and needs constant maintenance.

Because marble contains minerals, its iron content turns to rust over time, especially when exposed to high humidity so while it might not be advised to have marble flooring in bathrooms and showers, hallways are a whole different story.

Even if you choose small tiles or mosaic designs for your bathroom floor, you can still use marble to create an elegant and refined look that matches other features in the room. Consider light colors if you want to make the space appear larger.
