Before we jump in to talking about the pros and cons of open floor plans, it might be a good idea to talk about what this means, or in other words to define open. Open, in this instance, describes the layout of a larger space that functions as multiple rooms or functionalities within that single (larger) living space. The most common form of open floor plan in today’s homes includes a combination of kitchen, dining room, and living room all open to each other within a single “great room”.

You can have a practical design that also looks exquisite by combining wood with marble tiles in a manner that gives them both an artistic look.

Did you know that, although it sounds terribly modern and technical, underfloor heating actually dates back hundreds, by some counts thousands, of years? The Romans, for example, warmed rooms in their homes by running the flues for their “basement” fires, tended religiously by slaves, under elevated floors of marble.

The reasons why we, in general, love marble so much, are numerous and include details such as the fact that marble is very easy to work with and can be milled, machined and tumbled which allows it to have multiple uses. Marble floors are quite common although less popular than marble counters or table tops. Of course, marble floors don’t suit every type of space.

Remember to only clean it with mild products and to immediately clean up stains from lemons, tomatoes and acidic substances in general.

Kind of like an electric blanket, just under the floor.
