THE FERRY MAN

When you go down to the river,

bring a coin for the outstretched hand.

You’ll draw your cloak against the shiver,

you’ll be meeting The Ferry Man.

***

Leave your cares by the wayside.

Put down that old bag of tricks.

You’ll not want to be weighed down.

You’ll be crossing the River Styx.

***

Is she still there waiting,

barefoot dancer in the sand?

Will I be found wanting,

when I greet that outstretched hand?

***

When you step on to the ferry,

pay close regard to the outstretched hand.

It is no fair welcome,

it’s time to pay The Ferry Man.

***

Is she still there waiting,

barefoot dancer in the sand?

Dancing love from heart to heart,

in spite of The Ferry Man.

***

When you go down to the river,

bring a coin for the outstretched hand.

You’ll draw your cloak against the shiver,

you’ll be greeting The Ferry Man.
